Type O Blood Donations Help Trauma Centers Save Lives
HOUSTON – When a traumatic injury occurs, medical teams may have only moments to begin lifesaving care. From car crashes and workplace injuries to severe accidents and other medical emergencies, trauma centers depend on a readily available blood supply to treat patients without delay.
Gulf Coast Blood is urging eligible community members to donate blood, with an immediate focus on Type O donors, to help ensure hospitals and trauma centers have blood products available when patients need them.
In a trauma emergency, doctors may need to begin a blood transfusion before there is time to determine a patient's blood type. Type O blood is especially important in these situations. Type O negative red blood cells are commonly used in life-threatening emergencies when a patient's blood type is unknown. Type O positive, the most common blood type, is also important for emergency and trauma care.
“Trauma care is a race against the clock. When a patient arrives in critical condition, having blood immediately available can give medical teams the time and resources they need to save that person's life,” said Kevin Shipley, VP of Donor and Community Engagement of Gulf Coast Blood. “Every donation matters, but Type O donors play a particularly important role in helping trauma centers and hospitals respond to emergencies.”
Trauma centers need blood before the emergency
Unlike medications and other medical supplies, blood cannot be manufactured. It comes from volunteer donors, and blood products have a limited shelf life. A consistent supply of blood is essential to hospitals and trauma centers throughout the region before an emergency ever happens.
A single blood donation can help multiple patients, including people injured in traumatic accidents, patients undergoing surgery, individuals receiving cancer treatment and those living with chronic medical conditions.
Trauma patients can require large quantities of blood products in a very short period of time. When multiple emergencies happen at once, the demand for Type O blood can increase quickly. Donations made today help ensure blood is already available when a trauma patient needs it.
“People may not realize that a donation made today could help provide the blood a doctor needs during someone's worst moment,” said Stephanie Jacksis, Corporate Communications Manager for Gulf Coast Blood. “You can't predict when an emergency will happen, but you can help make sure blood is ready when it does. We encourage all donors, especially those with Type O blood, to make an appointment and give.”
Gulf Coast Blood encourages eligible donors of all blood types to give, with Type O positive and Type O negative donors especially needed to help support trauma centers and emergency care.
Donors also have an opportunity to learn more about their heart health. Through Dec. 31, eligible donors who complete a successful blood donation will receive a free cholesterol screening as part of Gulf Coast Blood's current donor wellness initiative.
