Blood Donations Needed After Hurricane Beryl
July 2024 - Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center and our community’s blood supply have been significantly impacted by Hurricane Beryl, which made landfall early July 8, 2024. Many blood drives throughout the area were canceled, and several community donor centers were temporarily closed due to power outages, hindering our on-hand blood supply. Despite these challenges, collecting and supplying blood for our area hospitals remains our top priority.
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center has an immediate need for two things:
- Blood donors
- Locations to host blood drives
Currently, our community needs all blood types to help treat patients in area hospitals and to help replenish the lost units we were unable to collect. When blood supplies are low, hospitals must decide where the blood goes. Non-life-threatening procedures that require blood are typically canceled first to help conserve the supply for emergencies and life-threatening needs. This is why an adequate blood supply is essential to better prepare us for when disaster strikes, such as hurricanes.
If you feel healthy, please make an appointment to donate blood. It is safe and easy, and our community needs it now. To find a location for donation, please visit giveblood.org.
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is also looking for businesses, community groups, and churches to host a blood drive in their community. Hosting a blood drive is free, and you can impact the lives of many. Those who are interested can go to our Host a Blood Drive page to get started.
Let us keep Houston strong and help ensure our community has the blood it needs.
